Siberian Huskies without an overbite
Overbites are increasingly common in Siberian Huskies. An overbite is an abnormal occlusion of the mouth where the lower jaw is shorter than the upper jaw. In most dogs with an overbite this malocclusion causes the canines and incisors of the lower jaw to damage the upper jaw.
Genetic Regions
We have now identified regions on the DNA that are associated with the condition. It is likely that multiple genes are involved in the development of the overbite. The condition is not only seen in dogs with a high level of inbreeding, but also in dogs from parents that are relatively unrelated to each other.
The Next Step
The veterinary researchers will proceed with the next step in their DNA analyses. With this, they aim to find the specific genetic defects that cause the condition. Eventually, a test can be developed that breeders can use in their selection of parent animals.
