A healthy future for the Kooikerhondje!
The Kooikerhondje, one of the nine Dutch dog breeds and part of our cultural heritage, was originally used to lure ducks into the duck decoys. Today it is a beloved family dog, but this breed also faces challenges in the areas of hereditary disorders and genetic diversity.
To keep the breed healthy, the Association the Kooikerhondje works together with the Expertise Centre for Veterinary Genetics. Through early detection of diseases, DNA storage, and targeted breeding guidance, we are jointly committed to a sustainable, healthy future for the Kooikerhondje.
Stronger together for the Kooikerhondje!
Especially for this breed, the breeding guidance platform Fit2Breed has been developed, thanks to partners and donors. This enables breeders worldwide to responsibly reduce hereditary diseases while at the same time preserving the genetic variation within the breed.
The Kooikerhondje is the first breed in the world to work with this innovative program. An important milestone – but we are not there yet!
The research team aims to further map the genetic profiles of Kooikerhondjes, so that DNA mutations can be detected more quickly and future generations can grow up healthier.
Every contribution makes a difference
To ensure that the Kooikerhondje can look forward to a healthy future, support is urgently needed. Every donation – large or small – contributes to research, monitoring, and the further development of genetic knowledge within the breed. We cannot do this alone!
Together we ensure that the Kooikerhondje remains healthy. Now and in the future.

How else can you help? Kooikerhondje owners: take part in research!
Do you have a Kooikerhondje? Then you can actively contribute to a healthy future for the breed. By participating in health studies or providing DNA material, you help researchers at the Expertise Centre for Veterinary Genetics to detect hereditary disorders more quickly and understand them better.
